Science Time is a great opportunity for children to come and learn about the world around us. Science Time is a free educational experience that Capstone Dentistry offers to the community and to our patients. The lessons consist of exciting visuals and experiments. They are targeted towards children in preschool through 6th grade.
Science Time is currently finished for the summer and we want to truly thank all that attended. We had a great time and hope you did as well. Below is the curriculum from last summer. Stay tuned for next year's schedule. We can't wait to get started again!
Cirriculum and Dates, 2013:
MICRO BIOLOGY: The branch of biology dealing with microscopic organisms. We will be studying bacteria - what they look like, what they do, and where they live. Kids will learn how to swab for bacteria and will practice taking samples to see which areas have the most.
PHYSICS: The science that deals with matter, energy, motion, and force. In this lesson we will be talking about the different teeth and their roles in chewing, the importance of brushing and flossing, and the most effective technique. Kids will be able to identify the most common places missed during routine home care using a special disclosing solution.
ANATOMY: The science dealing with the structure of animals and plants. During this fascinating lesson, several types of x-rays will be shown to help students learn the anatomy of the head and neck. They will also learn the eruption patterns of both primary and permanent teeth.
PHYSIOLOGY: The biological study of the functions of living organisms and their parts. The lesson will discuss inflammation and gingivitis. We will be presenting an entertaining story to easily help your child learn how our bodies fight infection. By the end of this study your child will be able to retell the story and apply it to other areas of health.
NUTRITION: The study or science of the dietary requirements of humans and animals for proper health and development. What foods are good and bad for our oral health? This question, and the more important question of why, will be answered during our study of oral health and nutrition. The children will be amazed at the amount of sugar that is in every day beverages and hopefully come away with better decision making skills when choosing what to eat and drink.
BIO CHEMISTRY: The scientific study of the chemical substances and processes of living matter. In this lesson we are going to learn about the process of decay by studying enamel, acid and the materials that are used to get a sick tooth back to health. We will also discuss how to prevent cavities with the use of sealants.
CHEMISTRY: The branch of physical science concerned with the composition, properties, and reactions of substances. We will be talking about some beneficial elements to dental health, especially fluoride. There are a lot of questions surrounding the use of fluoride and we will address the concerns and misconceptions that are our there. We will also be doing and eggs-periment that can be replicated at home.
BIOLOGY: The science of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, and growth. In our final session we are going to study one of the smallest building blocks in our body - the cell. We will use microscopes to observe and diagram cheek cells to see what happens to them with the oral environment changes.
We hope to see you there. Call for details. 913-396-4800
